Zamolxe Game Engine

The Zamolxe game engine is a modded OpenGL Quake and Quake 2 hybrid. It is able to take Quake BSP levels as game maps. It features no actual gameplay and is just a walking simulator. The last thing that was implemented was the ability to shoot a moving fire sprite in a straight line. There are no enemies, AI or even collision detection. Development of the engine did not take long and stalled when Quake models could not be imported or made work with it.

The name Zamolxe is derived from the Dacian and Greek god Zalmoxis, a relatively unknown God mentioned by Herodotus and Plato.

You can download the current (and final) alpha version of the engine.

    Zamolxe-Alpha.zip — .ZIP file, 21 MB

Disclaimer: It does work on Windows 10. However, you might experience problems due to the fact that resolution switching isn’t fully implemented.

The alpha version comes with three levels.
There are a number of configuration options if you launch the configuration utility called ZamolxeConfig.exe. Be warned, the instructions and configuration options are all in Romanian.
The engine uses open source libraries including FreeType6, OglExt, FMOD and Zlib compression.

There were two videos released for Zamolxe. One was a teaser trailer that did not feature any in-game footage. The second was a showcase, showing the current state of the alpha version. This one was shot entirely in-game.

This teaser trailer took music from the band Portishead. It was used without persmission. The video does not show any in-game images or footage. The temple image at the end, before the Zamolxe logo reveal, is the main menu background used for the alpha version.

This video is a showcase of the alpha version of the engine. I loaded the default BSP level and simply walked around. There are no sprites, models or in-game assets loaded other than the level and the textures. There is no gameplay whatsoever.

For documentary purposes, I have the readme.txt file that was attached to the alpha release of the engine. It’s in Romanian so, good luck. To note, there were some systems we tested the engine with. It all passed with flying colors.
